Detention Center Lieutenant

Description:

The Canadian County Sheriff's Office is now hiring for a full-time Jail Lieutenant. This position includes salary, competitive benefits, and training.

Under general supervision, supervises and coordinates the detention staff and is responsible for the custody of inmates, maintaining their security during incarceration and assuming responsibility for their needs during detention while utilizing direct supervision principles of management. Shift work required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

  1. Supervises and coordinates the detention staff for their assigned shift.
  2. Maintains records for compensatory time, leave requests and time sheets.
  3. Conducts background investigations for pending detention officer candidates.
  4. Coordinates all Human Resource related activities for new hires.
  5. Monitors staff training compliance.
  6. Completes maintenance requests.
  7. Responsible for custody and control of inmates, security of facilities, physical movement of inmates and all inmate needs.
  8. Supervises pulling inmates for court, visitation and sick calls; searching of inmates; completes shakedowns and cell inspections.
  9. Enforces contraband control and inmate rules of incarceration.
  10. Reviews and answers inmate staff requests.
  11. Responsible for facility sanitation cleanliness and unsafe conditions as required by agency policies and procedure, as well as State standards.
  12. Manages inmate recreation, commissary and mail collection/distribution, feeding and showers.
  13. Ensures delivery of hygiene products, clean clothing and linens to inmates.
  14. May be responsible and act as the agency vendor liaison for commissary process, billing to outside agencies, purchase of inventory items, oversight of food service and facility trustee assignment and supervision.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Starting Salary for a Detention Lieutenant in 2025 is $62,400.00/year plus benefits (non CLEET certified) $66,576.00/year plus benefits (CLEET certified).

Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or general education degree (GED), four years in corrections/law enforcement and 60 hours of college, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year of qualifying experience for each year of the required education. Two of the required four years in corrections/law enforcement must be in a supervisory capacity. CLEET certification may also count towards qualifying experience. Candidates will not have been formally disciplined in the last 12 months. Selected candidate(s) will be subject to a six (6) month probationary period. External candidates must pass employment background investigation and submit to pre-employment drug testing. Must possess valid Oklahoma Driver's License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands for handle or feel, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, climb stairs and reach with hands and arms, and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The physical ability to defend self, or others, as trained in the event of an altercation is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to airborne particles, and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level may oftentimes be loud. The employee may be exposed to outside weather conditions and, at times, must participate in physical altercations when necessary.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Skill in typing; in the use of computer and other technology; in supervising others; in the application of security techniques; and in maintaining security of inmate. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Knowledge of principles and practices of jail operations, of Federal, State, County and City regulations; of departmental policies and procedures; of supervisory principles and practices; of detention center records. Ability to plan, organize and control the work of others; to gain the respect and cooperation of others; to reason analytically; to interpret policies and make operational judgements, sometimes with limited information or time; and to organize and present facts and direction clearly and concisely. Ability to manage numerous deadlines and projects, while working in challenging environment.
