About this Position

As a Public Safety Dispatcher, you will make a difference every day. You help people during moments of urgent need and impact how well the police, fire, and after-hour emergency maintenance personnel perform their jobs. You are an important part of the public safety team that protects the lives & property of Edmond's residents.

Duties of a dispatcher involve receiving, prioritizing, and dispatching both emergency and non-emergency telephone calls. During these calls, dispatchers aid emergency callers, help them establish composure, obtain essential information from the caller, and dispatch the appropriate emergency personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and respond to both emergency and non-emergency telephone calls, directing to the appropriate authority for disposition
  • Dispatch emergency calls to fire and police responders, or Public Works/Utilities emergency crews
  • Monitor and transmit all radio communications
  • Coordinate emergency requests
  • Enter information into the Computer Aided Dispatch system and use OLETS/NCIC to query and enter data
  • Maintain various logs
  • Call out and notify off-duty personnel, including calling for support resources
Promotion Opportunities
  • Promotion to Public Safety Dispatcher II after 2 years of employment with acceptable job performance and completion of required on-the-job training
  • Promotion to Shift Supervisor (if available) after 2 years of employment and participation in a competitive selection process
  • Potential to be selected as department trainer (CTO) after 2 years of employment and completion of Communications Training Officer Certification Course
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • 7 to 11 months of related experience and/or training
    • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid Oklahoma Driver's License and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier
Necessary Skills
  • Availability and willingness to work any shift schedule (new hires are required to work all shifts during training, which can last up to 8 months or longer):
    • Day shift: 6 am - 2 pm
    • Evening shift: 2 pm - 10 pm
    • Back shift (overnights): 10 pm - 6 am
    • Split shift: 10 am - 6 pm and/or 6 pm - 2 am
      Split shift is utilized when staffing levels allow us to increase shift coverage during high call volume hours.These shifts are implemented and/or suspended as needed and are not guaranteed.
  • Strong customer service, critical thinking, and multi-tasking skills
  • Strong level of integrity and honesty
  • Advanced computer and typing skills
  • Ability to handle high levels of stress during in-progress emergencies while maintaining focus and composure
  • Ability to learn and retain information quickly while under stress
  • Ability to take initiative and exercise independent judgement
  • Ability to meet the required physical standards for this position
  • Ability to pass extensive background process and pre-employment drug and audio screenings
